German salt-glazed stoneware Bartmann Jug ( Bearded Man).

Featuring a salt-glazed stoneware process that involves throwing common salt into the kiln at ultra-high temperatures. The vaporized salt chemically reacts with the clay to form a glassy, durable, pitted glaze that leaves a texture famously resembling an orange peel. The deep blue highlights are hand-painted cobalt. This type of jug features a characteristic bearded man's face. These jugs were historically produced in Germany, particularly the Westerwald region, from the 16th to 18th centuries. The reproduction pieces have the year “1558 stamped above the man's head, which refers to the period and original style when first produced. The original & reproductions are marked on the base with the WC (Werner Corzelius) logo and a mold number, such as W 3401. The alternate name Bellarmine is thought to be a Protestant satirical reference to the Catholic Cardinal Robert Bellarmine. No chips, cracks, hairlines or repairs.
